Shopify migration SEO checklist

To migrate to Shopify without losing rankings, crawl the old site, map every old URL to its new one with 301 redirects, carry over titles, descriptions and structured data, submit a new sitemap in Search Console and test everything before launch. Expect a short dip even when done well, then monitor weekly.

A store moved to Shopify on a Thursday. By Monday its best-selling category page, which brought in most of its organic traffic, returned a 404. Nobody had mapped the old URL.

What actually causes ranking loss

Migrations rarely lose rankings because Shopify is bad for search. They lose them because URLs change without redirects, titles and headings disappear, pages are blocked by mistake, or the new site is slower than the old one. All of these are preventable and all are visible in a checklist.

Shopify also has fixed URL patterns: products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. If your old site used different paths, redirects are not optional.

The checklist

Work through these in order. Items one to six happen before launch, seven to eleven on launch day, and twelve to fifteen after.

  1. Crawl the old site and export every indexable URL with its title, meta description, H1, canonical and status code.
  2. Pull the pages that bring organic traffic and revenue from Search Console and analytics, and mark them as priority.
  3. Build the redirect map: each old URL to the closest new URL, one to one wherever possible.
  4. Carry over page titles, meta descriptions and H1s for priority pages. Change them only on purpose.
  5. Recreate structured data: product, breadcrumb, organisation and FAQ markup where the old site had it.
  6. Set up the new store on a staging link with search engines blocked, and test redirects against the crawl list.
  7. Import the redirects into Shopify and spot-check a sample, including URLs with parameters.
  8. Remove the staging block and make sure robots.txt and noindex tags allow crawling.
  9. Point the domain, confirm HTTPS works and the primary domain redirects correctly.
  10. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and request indexing for key pages.
  11. Test checkout, tracking and tags on the live site with a real order.
  12. Check Search Console coverage and crawl errors daily for the first two weeks.
  13. Compare rankings, clicks and indexed pages with the old crawl each week for six to eight weeks.
  14. Fix new 404s by adding redirects as they appear.
  15. Update external listings, profiles and ad destination URLs to the new links.

The redirect map is the whole game

Every old URL that has traffic or backlinks needs a 301 to the best matching new page. A redirect to the home page for everything is treated by search engines as a soft failure and wastes the link value.

We keep the map in a spreadsheet with a status column so nothing is guessed on launch day. Our migration map mockup shows the format.

Metadata and on-page content

Titles, meta descriptions, headings and body copy carry your rankings. On Shopify, edit these per product, collection and page in the search listing preview. Bulk imports often leave them blank, so check that your CSV includes them.

  • Keep titles under about 60 characters and descriptions under about 155.
  • Keep one H1 per page; many themes use the product title, so check it.
  • Preserve image alt text; migration tools often drop it.
  • Keep Arabic and English versions linked with the right language tags if you serve both.

Structured data

Product pages should expose price, availability and reviews data in a format search engines can read. Most good themes output product markup, but check it with Google's Rich Results Test on a sample of products, collections and pages after the theme is built, because custom sections can break it.

✓ Google's structured data requirements and the tools used to test them change over time. Last checked October 2026. Confirm with Google Search Central before relying on it.

Search Console and tracking

  • Verify the domain property so you see all protocols and subdomains.
  • Submit the Shopify sitemap at /sitemap.xml, which Shopify generates for you.
  • Do not use the Change of Address tool unless the domain itself changes.
  • Keep the old crawl and a ranking export to compare against.
  • Confirm analytics and ad conversion tags fire on the new checkout.

✓ Search Console features and Shopify sitemap behaviour are updated periodically. Last checked October 2026. Confirm with Google and Shopify before relying on it.

Launch-day steps

Pick a quiet trading day and avoid peaks like Ramadan sales, White Friday or a campaign. Freeze content changes on the old site the day before.

  1. Take a final backup and crawl of the old site.
  2. Import the final redirect list and product data delta.
  3. Switch DNS and wait for it to propagate.
  4. Re-test ten priority URLs, checkout and a payment through each method.
  5. Submit the sitemap and watch server responses for 404s.

Keep the old platform running read-only for at least a few weeks. It is your reference when something looks wrong.

What to expect after

Even a clean migration usually causes some movement as search engines re-process the site. Honest expectation: a small dip is common and recovery depends on how clean the redirect map and content carry-over were. Anyone promising zero change is guessing. We handle this as part of our migration work, and the broader search picture is in our e-commerce SEO guide.

Questions

You might see short-term movement, but losses are avoidable with a complete 301 redirect map, preserved metadata and content, and testing before launch. Most serious drops come from missed redirects.

Simple catalogues can move in a few weeks as part of a build. Larger stores with many redirects and custom data take longer. Scope depends on product count and integrations.

You cannot keep every path, since Shopify uses /products/ and /collections/, but you can redirect every old URL to its new equivalent. That preserves most of the link value.

After. Avoid launching close to Ramadan, White Friday or major campaigns, so you have time to fix issues without losing peak sales.
