You can sell on Instagram without a website, using DMs, WhatsApp and payment links, and it is a good way to test demand. It breaks down when orders pile up, stock is shared, or customers want to pay in instalments. Move to a store then. A Shopify setup starts from AED 3,450, excluding 5% VAT.
Your Instagram account sells. Customers message you, you send a payment link or bank details, you pack the order and you hand it to a courier. It works. But some days there are forty chats, someone asks for a colour you sold out of yesterday, and you cannot find which customer paid. This is the point where owners ask whether it is time for a website.
Instagram is a great place to start
Many UAE brands began in the direct messages. It costs almost nothing, you learn what customers ask, and you can see within weeks whether anyone will pay. We often tell new sellers to do this before building anything. If people do not buy from a chat, a website will not change that.
The question is what happens when it starts to work. Here is the whole picture: how to take payments without a site, where this gets hard, and the signs that it is time to move to a store.
How people sell on Instagram without a website
- They post products with clear photos, price and a line on how to order.
- A customer sends a DM or taps a WhatsApp link in the bio.
- You confirm the item, size, address and delivery cost in the chat.
- You send a way to pay: a payment link, a bank transfer, or cash on delivery.
- You pack and book the courier, then send the tracking number by message.
Every step is manual. That is fine for five orders a week. It becomes a job on its own at fifty.
Taking payment without a store
You have a few ways to get paid. Each has a catch.
| Method | How it works | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Payment link | A UAE payment provider gives you a link that you send in chat; the customer pays by card | Needs an approved merchant account, which usually asks for a licence. You still create each link by hand |
| Bank transfer | Customer sends money to your account | No instant confirmation, and customers must trust you with their bank details |
| Cash on delivery | Courier collects cash | Failed deliveries, delays in receiving cash, and reconciling payments |
| Buy now pay later | Tabby or Tamara in instalments | See below |
| Store checkout | Customer pays on your own website | Needs a store, but removes the manual work |
Provider terms, fees and approval rules change, and they differ between providers. Ask each one for its current requirements in writing.

Tabby and Tamara without a website
Buy now pay later is popular with UAE shoppers, especially for baskets above a few hundred dirhams. Both Tabby and Tamara are best known as checkout options on websites and in shops. Some providers also offer ways for smaller sellers to take instalment payments by link or in person, but availability depends on your business, your licence and the provider's current rules. We cannot promise it for your account.
Practical advice: apply and ask. Tell each provider you sell through social media and ask exactly what they offer for a seller without a site. If the answer is that you need a store, that tells you something useful about timing. Providers also charge merchants a higher fee than a plain card payment, so work out your margin first. Our guide Shopify with Tabby and Tamara explains how it works once you have a store.
Instagram's own shop features
Instagram has tools for tagging products, and in some countries a built-in checkout. Meta has limited the checkout feature to certain markets, so whether you can use it in the UAE depends on current availability. Check Meta's Help Centre for your account. Even where tagging works, you still need somewhere for the customer to complete the order, which is typically a website.
A simple way to keep chat orders under control
While you are still selling by message, a little discipline helps a lot. Keep a single sheet with one row per order: date, customer, item, size, price, paid or not, courier and tracking number. Reply with the same template each time, listing price, delivery cost and delivery time. Save common answers as quick replies in WhatsApp Business. This does not replace a store, but it shows you which questions repeat, and those are the things a store page should answer.
Seven signs it is time for a store
- Orders get lost in chats, and you forget who paid.
- You sell something that comes in sizes or colours, and stock is shared across customers.
- Customers ask for instalments or Apple Pay.
- You spend more than an hour a day answering the same questions.
- Customers say they cannot find your prices or product details.
- You want to run ads and need a page to send people to.
- You are worried about losing your account, and want a channel you own.
Two or three of these is a nudge. Five or more means the manual way is already costing you sales and time.
What a store adds, and what it does not
A store gives you tracked stock, checkout with several payment options, order records, delivery rules, and customer emails you own. It also gives you something to point Google at, because Instagram posts are not easy to find through search.
It does not give you customers. Instagram will usually stay your main source of visitors, and the store simply catches them better. Plan to keep posting, and connect the two: product links in your bio, a shop button and your catalogue kept in step.
What it costs to move to a store, in AED
| Option | From (AED, excl. 5% VAT) | Time | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify setup package | 3,450 | 2 to 3 weeks | A single brand using a premium theme |
| Shopify launch store | 4,950, typical to 12,000 | 3 to 4 weeks | More products and custom pages |
| Arabic right-to-left on launch tier | About 1,750 | In build | Arabic-reading customers |
| Platform plan, payment fees | Varies, billed by providers | Monthly | Check the pricing pages |
Under AED 20,000, we take 50% to start and 50% at launch. You own the store account, the code and the domain. Read how to start an online store in Dubai for the full order of work, or our page on an online store for small business in the UAE for what we include.
Customers and trust
Some buyers are happy to pay a stranger on Instagram. Many are not. They worry about fake accounts, never-arriving parcels and no way to complain. A website with your business name, contact details, returns rules and secure checkout answers those worries before the customer asks. For higher-priced items, that trust is often the real reason to build a store, more than the technology.
Check your licence before you scale
Selling goods for profit, including through Instagram, generally needs a licence in the UAE. Payment providers and Tabby or Tamara usually ask for it, too. Routes people use include a Dubai e-Trader licence, a free-zone licence or a mainland licence, and sources disagree on who qualifies. See do you need a licence to sell online in Dubai, and confirm with DET or a PRO. This is not legal advice.
How to move without losing your followers
- Keep Instagram as it is. Do not stop posting.
- Build the store alongside it with your best-selling items first.
- Move the link in your bio to the store, and add a WhatsApp button for questions.
- Tell regular customers they can now pay by card and instalments.
- Keep one stock count. If an item sells out on Instagram, it should show as sold out in the store.
- After a month, look at which orders still come by chat, and ask why.
Our Haya Modest design study shows an abaya store with sizing, fabrics and Arabic right-to-left, which is the sort of detail that is hard to handle in a DM.
When we are not the right fit
If you have fewer than ten orders a month, keep selling by DM. Spend the money on better photos and stock. If you have not checked your licence and payment approval, do that first, because a store you cannot take payments on is an expensive brochure. We are the right fit once orders are growing and the manual work is holding you back.
