Most UAE brands do not need headless commerce. A custom Shopify theme (from AED 14,500) delivers fast, distinctive storefronts with the Shopify admin intact. Headless builds start from AED 34,500 and 10 to 16 weeks, and make sense when you need several storefronts, unusual front-end behaviour or content that Shopify themes cannot model.
The brief says "we want to go headless". Asked why, the founder says a competitor did it and their developer said it is faster. Nobody has listed a feature a theme cannot deliver.
What headless actually means
In a standard Shopify store, Shopify runs the back end (products, cart, checkout, orders) and renders the storefront with a Liquid theme. In a headless build, Shopify still runs the back end, but the storefront is a separate application that fetches data through the Storefront API and renders it itself.
Hydrogen is Shopify's own React framework for that front end, designed to be hosted on Shopify's Oxygen platform. You can also build the front end in Next.js or another framework and host it elsewhere. Both are headless. Checkout stays on Shopify in either case.

What a custom theme can already do
People assume a theme means a template look. A custom theme is code written for your brand: your own sections, typography, motion, Arabic RTL layout, product configurators, bundles and metafield-driven content. Online Store 2.0 gives merchants a theme editor for rearranging those sections without a developer.
A well-built theme can score very well on speed, because you control the scripts. The slow Shopify stores we see are slow because of 20 apps and a heavy premium theme, not because they are not headless.
Where headless genuinely wins
- Several storefronts on one catalogue: brand sites, regional sites or a B2B portal with different layouts, all fed from one back end.
- Content-led commerce, where the editorial side (long-form stories, lookbooks, a magazine) outweighs the catalogue and lives in a headless CMS.
- Front-end behaviour that Liquid makes painful: heavily personalised pages, complex 3D or configurator experiences, app-like navigation.
- A team that already has front-end engineers and wants their own deployment pipeline, testing and tooling.
- A single front end serving a store, an app and in-store screens from the same APIs.
What you give up
Headless trades convenience for control, and the bill arrives in several places.
- The theme editor and many apps. Most Shopify apps inject into Liquid themes. In a headless build each one needs a custom integration or a replacement.
- Preview and merchant independence. Marketing can no longer drag a section into place unless we build that capability.
- Speed to ship. Features a theme gets from a setting are code again.
- Ownership. You now run an application: hosting, monitoring, security updates, dependency upgrades.
- SEO risk. Rendering, routing, redirects, sitemaps and structured data all become your responsibility.

Does headless make a store faster?
Not automatically. A badly built headless site is slower than a good theme, because it adds a network hop and a framework. A well-built one can feel instant, with server rendering and edge caching done properly. The honest answer is that speed comes from discipline: image handling, script budgets and caching. Headless gives you more control over those, and more ways to get them wrong.
Who should choose which
Choose a custom theme if
- You are one brand with one catalogue and one or two languages.
- Your team edits content weekly and wants to do it themselves.
- You want a distinctive storefront without a software product to maintain.
Choose headless if
- You run multiple storefronts, markets or a B2B portal from one catalogue.
- Your experience depends on a front end Liquid cannot reasonably express.
- You have, or will fund, ongoing engineering.
For luxury houses the answer is usually a custom theme with strong editorial sections, because the merchandising team needs to change campaigns quickly. Our Maison Verre design study is a custom Shopify theme for that reason.
Questions to ask before you commit
- Which specific feature can a Liquid theme not deliver?
- Who will maintain the front end in year two, and at what monthly cost?
- Which of your current apps would need replacing?
- How will merchants preview and publish content?
- What is the plan for redirects, structured data and sitemaps?
If the answers are vague, build the theme first. You can move to headless later; the catalogue, orders and customers stay in Shopify either way.
Questions
Hydrogen is one way to build a headless Shopify storefront. It is Shopify's React framework. You can also go headless with Next.js or another framework.
Not necessarily for the Storefront API itself, but some checkout and enterprise features need Plus. We confirm the exact requirements against Shopify's current documentation during scoping.
Yes. Products, customers and orders stay in Shopify, so the migration is a front-end project, not a re-platform.
Our headless and Plus builds start from AED 34,500, excluding 5% VAT, over 10 to 16 weeks. The final figure depends on integrations, languages and how much content tooling you need.
